Artist Larry Kirkland designs monumental site-specific installations for institutions around the world. His 40-foot-high bronze doors, etched in Latin verse from the first page of Genesis in the Gutenberg Bible, form the entrance to the new Museum of the Bible on Fourth Street SW.
He conceives these works in a light-filled double garage-sized studio — designed by architect Michael Lee Beidler — that joins his Northwest Washington house with translucent glass pocket doors. “So I keep the light between the two spaces,” Kirkland said.

Million-dollar condos, once a rarity in the Washington region, may be more common than in the past but they’re still surprising. What makes a condo worth that price often includes a prime location, plenty of space, high-end finishes and a splashy floor plan.
The Logan, a new six-unit condominium development at 1310 Q St. NW where the units are priced from $1.150 million to $2.845 million, hits all those buttons.
Several factors make the Logan different from typical condo developments in the city: Each unit has a different floor plan with private elevator access. The condos have 1,600 to 3,500 square feet. Each has private outdoor space. And the construction standards are exceptionally high.
Trout Design Studio oversaw the renovation of the original building on the site, a former bed-and-breakfast built as a residence in 1887, as well as the new building on the adjacent lot. Jeff Akseizer, principal of the Akseizer Design Group, provided interior design services.

The Northwest Washington neighborhood of Mount Pleasant, consistently one of the most sought-after markets in the city for the past few years, is known for its stately rowhouses and a handful of single-family houses in the western part of the community as well as condos and apartments closer to the commercial center along Mount Pleasant Street.
Redfin brokerage named Mount Pleasant the fifth-hottest neighborhood in the United States at the beginning of 2016, with a median home price of $760,000.
Now five new condos in two adjacent buildings are pushing up prices in the neighborhood, listing for as much as $1.295 million.
Developer Matt Shkor at Potomac Construction and architect Michael Beidler of Trout Design renovated and remodeled a dilapidated single-family house at 1867 Park Rd. NW, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, into a three-unit condo. They built a two-unit condo building on an adjacent lot, at 1865 Park Rd. NW.

The former Italian Embassy on 16th Street NW, the subject of a long-planned condominium conversion that just can’t get going, has sold to an active residential development company that may shift gears.
Dallas-based Mill Creek Residential Trust closed Tuesday on the $16.2 million acquisition of 2700 16th St. NW, a 44,000-square-foot lot on the border of Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights that includes the historic 35,000-square-foot embassy building. Representatives for both the seller and buyer confirmed the deal.

Work has begun on the transformation of the former Italian Embassy in Adams Morgan-Columbia Heights into more than 100 residential units. Although construction of the project, called The Flats at Il Palazzo, is not scheduled until winter of 2015 at the earliest, Michael Beidler, principal of Trout Design Studio, says that some exterior demolition and site work and some interior demolition are underway.
“The plan has not changed from the original [residential] program. But it has evolved and is in the process for the building permit from DCRA,” he says.
Architects from Trout Design Studio are collaborating with developer Potomac Construction Group on the reuse of the historic property at 2700 16th Street NW. ]]>
