SWANN STREET, Washington, DC
This project's goal was to expand the outdoor space of a classic row house in the heart of the Dupont Circle Historic District. To compliment to the existing 3rd floor deck, we designed an additional deck space accessed by a new Ipê encased spiral staircase from the lower level. The result is a spacious deck made of Ipê that maximizes the area on the existing roof but remains sensitive to the historic context of the surrounding neighborhood. A tall fence surrounds the deck ensures privacy, but returns low to the front (south side) of the house to remain invisible at street level. Our favorite feature of the project is the new Ipe encased winding staircase that leads from the lower deck, with tall vertical boards surround the staircase, trimmed at the bottom following the slope of the stair. The result is a modern, sculptural, tower-like cylinder that unites the upper and lower decks. |
