This modest but extraordinary kitchen renovation combined 3 separate spaces in a Historic rowhouse in downtown Washington, D.C. We removed all of the existing floors, walls and ceilings separating an existing galley kitchen, narrow dining room and rear sun room, installing steel beams and columns to support the existing upper floor bearing walls and the rear masonry wall of the house to create a clean slate on which a modern, open plan kitchen-dining-sunroom space was created.
Working with the design savvy clients, we collaborated to create and implement a very modern, expansive space that embodies classic design principles with modern utility and materials into a stunning cooking and dining showplace between the very classic living room and the botanical rear yard oasis.
The new space features custom wood cabinets; modern accent wall tiles; state of the art built-in appliances and audio-visual system; a custom hand hewn teak eat-at bar; stone counters; a new powder room and coat closet which integrate antique teak doors acquired from travels abroad; and heated tile floors. During the day the space is flooded with natural light allowing the space to be used with-out artificial light, after dark the space is illuminated by an aurora of dimmable lighting, throughout.
